The short answer: if you're new to running, not feeling the runner's high is the normal experience, not a personal failure. The euphoric state people describe is driven primarily by endocannabinoids, not endorphins, and the available evidence suggests it requires a level of aerobic fitness most beginners don't have yet. It also appears to require a fairly specific effort: moderate to vigorous continuous aerobic running, roughly 70 to 85 percent of max heart rate, sustained for at least 30 minutes. Run easier than that and you may stay below the threshold. Run harder than that and you cut the duration short before it arrives. Most people who report finding it did so after a few months of consistent running, not a few weeks.
The endorphin story you've heard is mostly wrong
Since the 1970s, the runner's high has been credited to endorphins. It made intuitive sense because blood endorphin levels rise after exercise. But there's a problem with that explanation: endorphins are large, water-soluble molecules, and they don't readily cross the blood-brain barrier. Whatever is happening in your bloodstream isn't necessarily reaching your brain.
The better candidate is the endocannabinoid system, specifically a molecule called anandamide, which is fat-soluble and crosses the blood-brain barrier easily. It also rises during sustained aerobic exercise.
The clearest human test came from Johannes Fuss's lab at the University of Hamburg. In a 2021 study published in Psychoneuroendocrinology (Siebers et al.), researchers gave runners naltrexone, a drug that blocks opioid receptors and therefore blocks endorphins from doing their job. If endorphins were the mechanism, the high should have disappeared. It didn't. The proportion of runners reporting a runner's high was comparable between the naltrexone group and the placebo group, while endocannabinoid levels rose alongside the euphoria and the drop in anxiety.
Earlier work in mice from the same research group pointed the same direction: blocking endorphin receptors left the post-run effects intact, and blocking cannabinoid receptors made them vanish.
One honest caveat that most articles skip. The strongest receptor-level evidence is still from mice. The human study showed that the high doesn't require opioid signaling; it did not directly test what happens when endocannabinoid signaling is blocked in people. The endocannabinoid explanation is the best-supported one available, not a closed case.
So why don't you feel it?
There are three likely reasons, and for most new runners it's all three at once.
You're running below the threshold. Walking doesn't produce it. Very easy jogging often doesn't either. The intensity window that most researchers point to is roughly 70 to 85 percent of age-adjusted max heart rate, which for many runners lands somewhere around a comfortably-hard or tempo effort.
You're running above the threshold. This is the part people get backwards. Going harder does not make it more likely. The endocannabinoid response appears to be triggered by sustained physiological stress, not by pain, and if you're running hard enough that you have to stop at 15 minutes, you never reach the duration where it shows up. The window is generally described as at least 30 continuous minutes.
You're not fit enough yet to hold that window. This is the real one for beginners, and it's the least often said out loud. If you're new, the effort that would put you in the right heart rate zone is also the effort that makes you feel like you're dying, so you can't sustain it for 30 minutes. Regular runners report the effect more often than occasional runners do. New runners frequently report no positive feeling at all, describing running instead as simply painful. Your experience is the documented one.
There is no guaranteed recipe here. Findings vary by duration, fitness level, and how the research measured things. Some people run for years and rarely feel it.
How long does it take?
There's no clean number in the literature, and anyone giving you one is guessing. But there are useful data points.
On the For The Long Run podcast, Daniel Berk described going from a 50-minute 5K, roughly 50 pounds overweight and unable to remember the last time he'd sprinted, to feeling it for the first time at around the 60 to 90 day mark, running four to six times a week, four or five miles into a run.
His description of the period before that is the part worth quoting, because it's what almost everyone feels and almost nobody says:

Two things in that timeline matter more than the calendar. Four to six runs a week is real consistency, and four to five miles into a run is well past the 30-minute mark. He built the aerobic capacity to spend half an hour in the right zone, and then it showed up.
What it actually feels like, and how long it lasts
The core features described in the research are euphoria, reduced anxiety, reduced pain sensitivity, and a mild sedative calm. In practice, people describe it as the effort suddenly getting easier without their legs having recovered, and a sense that they could keep going indefinitely.
The acute sensation is typically brief, on the order of 20 to 30 minutes, with the broader mood lift lasting a few hours afterward. Some people report it lasting most of the day.
It's also unpredictable. Even highly trained runners with decades of consistency report runs where nothing works and it never arrives. Not getting it on a given day is not a sign that something is wrong with your training.
The training tension nobody resolves
Here's where the practical advice gets complicated, and we'd rather flag it than pretend it doesn't exist.
The intensity window associated with the runner's high, roughly 70 to 85 percent of max heart rate, is not where you should be running most of your weekly volume. Every serious endurance training model puts the bulk of your mileage well below that, at conversational easy effort, because that's what builds aerobic capacity without accumulating fatigue and injury risk.
So chasing the high on every run is a bad training plan. The reasonable version: the effort that tends to produce it lines up naturally with your tempo or threshold day, and with the back half of a long run once you're fit enough that a long run sits at a moderate effort rather than a maximal one. You'll find it inside good training. You shouldn't restructure good training to find it.
Frequently asked questions
Is the runner's high real? Yes. It's a documented phenomenon with measurable neurochemical correlates, though the exact prevalence is unknown and it's not universal.
Is it endorphins? Probably not, or at least not primarily. Endorphins don't readily cross the blood-brain barrier. Endocannabinoids, particularly anandamide, are the leading explanation.
Can you get it from other sports? Yes. It's not specific to running. Cycling, swimming, rowing, and other sustained aerobic efforts have been associated with the same response, which is why it's sometimes called a rower's high.
Do you need to run far to feel it? Distance matters less than continuous time at the right effort. The commonly cited threshold is at least 30 minutes.
Will I ever feel it? Most consistent runners eventually do. If you're a few weeks in and feeling nothing but misery, that's the expected experience at that stage, not evidence that it isn't coming.
